Turning risk into an opportunity
After an initial stage of almost total economic standstill, two periods have been coming our way since the end of lockdown: the gradual return to economic growth and then our ability to live with new rules and paradigms.
The issues at stake in these two major cycles are distinct: management of flows and mobility in compliance with health rules for the former; reworking of current economic models with a view to greater sustainability for the latter; without losing sight the objective of the emergence of a global social and societal model that is more virtuous in ecological terms.
In any case, while the top priority during the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic has been, and still is, for many organisations, managing the economic crisis and preserving the health of their employees, their safety and their essential services, the second, indisputably, will be dedicated to supporting their recovery.
Our role in this sense will be decisive in helping economic actors of all types and nationalities to strengthen their resilience, stimulate their development, in France, Europe and throughout the world, develop their image and their teams, and defend and preserve their interests through a new vision of the future, in a context of unprecedented economic and social upheaval and in an even more unstable environment.
The health crisis, which began in mid-March 2020, has thus called into question our professional models and practices in terms of public affairs and communication for a long time to come, by posing with particular acuity the question of the future. While certain things can no longer be taken for granted, a plethora of opportunities are presenting themselves in parallel, in particular due to new technologies that will enable many of our industries to reinvent themselves and accelerate the construction of new relationships. But make no mistake: the coronavirus is not only threatening our bodies, it is also contaminating our minds. Our information technology is as viral as the disease it feeds on. One threatens our physical bodies, the other threatens our ability to think: although technological use now seems to be predominant, it must not become the ultimate panacea.
A large part of our consulting business is based on collaboration and the creation of active links with our clients, but also with the authorities in charge and with the media, and more generally with all our partners. The threat is real at this stage: by systematically contenting ourselves with virtual relationships, there is a risk of damaging, and definitively undermining, not only the social bond, fundamental to business and society, but also of disembodying the profound nature of our activities, which are based on conviction and intuitu personae argumentation, and which would, in fact, come to be depersonalized and emptied of their meaning.
Finally, if this crisis and the considerable risks it entails give food for thought, it also gives us a major reason to act, by going off the beaten track to accompany this decisive step, in other words, to lead change. Inevitable.
Faced with this common and unavoidable challenge, we at FairValue are betting on our ability to transform together this uncertain future into an opportunity.
